A Few Nice Defensive Additions For The Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns have been busy this off-season in grabbing a few nice defensive additions and having signed eight players since the beginning of free agency. Their biggest pick up was former Ravens linebacker Paul Kruger who last year had 42 tackles, 9 sacks, six passes defended, and an interception for Baltimore.
Cleveland’s biggest needs come in the secondary as they appear to be through with Sheldon Brown and lack a true number two cornerback to start opposite of Joe Haden. They have courted the top free agent corner back in Brent Grimes however it has been more than a week with no further news.
They have plenty of opportunity to shore up their secondary as their are some good cornerbacks left in free agency and the Browns hold the sixth pick in the draft where they could fix their defensive back issue by selecting the best one in the draft Alabama’s Dee Milliner. In the meantime they have added two pieces with former Falcon Chris Owns and former Lion Kevin Barnes
Cleveland also added some depth to it’s defensive line picking former Raider DT Desmond Bryant who is a steady contributor and journeyman DE Quentin Groves who had the best year of his career last season with four sacks.
The Browns have not yet targeted many offensive players via free-agency as of yet grabbing two TE’s Kellen Davis and Gary Barnidge along with running back Chris Ogbonnaya. They currently have WR-PR Josh Cribbs and receiver Mohamed Massaquoi unsigned and it looks as if they will probably lose Cribbs who has been frustrated with the Browns and could use a fresh start somewhere else.
Cleveland has lost five players so far to free agency in kicker Phil Dawson, TE Ben Watson, DE Frostee Rucker, LB Kaluka Maiva, and QB Josh Johnson. The Bengals are really happy they were able to grab Josh Johnson from them to compete for their back-up spot , but Cleveland may feel the loss of Benjamin Watson who had 49 catches, 501 yards, and 3 scores the most out of all of them.
Only time will tell if the new GM Joe Banner wants to keep last years first round pick QB Brandon Weedon as their starter or if the new regime wants to get a new QB in the draft that they can stamp their brand on.
