Glover Teixeira (shown on left, throwing punch) gets a chance at the UFC Light Heavyweight championship as he headlines UFC 172 against Jon Jones.

The UFC 172 card is set for Baltimore, Maryland on April 26th.  The card features the next title defense for UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones, as he takes on long time contender Glover Teixeira in the main event.  Jones has not been seen since his September match-up with Alexander Gustafsson, where he had the toughest fight of his career, but he is still a massive favorite against Teixeira as he is (-600) to Teixeira’s (+450) return.  Though Jones will win the fight, it may be time to take a look at Teixeira and what he brings to this matchup.

I think it was Boxing Hall of Famer Marvin Hagler who once said ‘It’s real hard to get up at 5am and run 5 miles when you’re in a 4 post bed wearing silk pajamas.’  Jones has been champion for a long time, and though his arrest for DUI was a long time ago, he was arrested in his silk pajamas so to speak, as he probably owns the only Bentley in upstate New York!  After the Gustafsson fight, he said all the right things about getting better and re-focusing on training, but the big x-factor in this fight is really whether Jones did what he said he was going to do.

Because as far as hunger is concerned, Teixeira is there.   He is is on a 20 fight winning streak, including 5-0 in the UFC.  He did not let getting to the UFC be good enough when he made the jump, he remained focused and continued winning, finishing 4 of his 5 fights in bludgeoning style.

If Jones is anything less than otherworldly, he could allow Teixeira to stay in the fight and gain confidence.  With Teixeira, you can count on him being aggressive, and if he gets through and hurts Jones, he is the kind of guy who will work to finish the fight.

As stated, Jones will likely win this fight, but funnier things have happened, and 6 to 1 is steep odds, you gotta lok at Teixeira here.
