When it comes to betting on the AFC and NFC Championship games at the sportsbook most people think the match ups will be close. History tells another story as more than half of the title games since 1970 have been decided by double-digits and almost half have been decided by 14 points or more.
Favorites since 1970 are just barely above .500 against the spread at 54%. Home favorites are slightly better at 56% against the spread. Betting the over has been moderately successful with 29 of the last 50 title games going over.
If we look at more recent trends we find that home teams have won about 60% of the time straight up in the past decade but they are just .500 against the NFL playoff odds. Betting the over has been the way to go with 16 of the last 22 going over.
The last 3 AFC title games have seen the home team lose 2 of 3 with 2 of the 3 going under the total. In the NFC, the home team has lost in each of the past 3 seasons with 2 of the 3 going under on total points.
