Arizona Cardinals Desperately Need A QB This Offseason

The Arizona Cardinals desperately need a QB in a tough off-season to be needing one. There are slim pickings available after the Kansas City Chiefs traded with the 49ers for QB Alex Smith, and the Miami Dolphins resigned Matt Moore.. With Smith in KC and Moore set in Miami, it leaves Jason Campbell who is becoming a journeyman as the best available on the free agent market.

Besides Jason Campbell no other QB on the market has the ability to start and are solid back-ups at best including the likes of Byron Leftwich, Matt Leinart, Drew Stanton Charlie Batch, David Carr, Kellen Clemens, Bruce Gradkowski, Rex Grossman, and Tyler Thigpen.. Trading for Seattle’s Matt Flynn would be unlikely as they would have to overpay for the trade, and overpay via contract just like they did Kolb , and it maybe too soon for that.

If the Cardinals were to take one of the quarterbacks available they would grab one as veteran leadership to help groom a rookie who will be thrown into the fire week one or late season. QB’s Geno Smith and Matt Barkley keeps ringing as possibilities for Arizona come draft time , and I would assume this to be the direction they would go even though the position is projected very week this draft.

Apart from a signal caller the Cardinals have holes all over the field on offense and defense. Arizona’s offensive line is a mess and they will need an offensive tackle, a guard, and they will also need another running back as Beanie Wells and LaRod Stephens-Howling could go via free agency. They are high on Ryan Williams so if they were to keep either Wells of Howling it would be to compliment him, If they do not keep either, then they will be looking to grab a running back come day two of the draft.

On defense Cardinals could use another pass rusher whether it be opposite of rising star DE Calais Campbell or a linebacker that eats some double teams they would be wise to get someone that can help Campbell pressure the QB. Vonnie Holliday is not very effective at age 37 and Darnell Dockett the only other capable lineman didn’t provide much at all last season. Arizona could use a safety or two as Kerry Rhodes is in the final year of his deal and they would like to get a safety to take over for aging Adrian Wilson who has been on the decline.

Although Kevin Kolb could likely start the season, look for the Arizona Cardinals to address their QB issue via the draft and grab some bodies to protect him for when he starts when Kolb either goes down due to injury or continues to unimpress. A second day draft pick will yield a running back and a capable pass rusher to complement Calais Campbell and with this overhaul there will be some hope for the fans of the Arizona Cardinals.
