Arizona Cardinals Do Not Reach For A QB, Select Guard Jonathan Cooper
The Arizona Cardinals in-fact do feel comfortable going forward with QB Carson Palmer choosing not to reach for a QB in the 2013 NFL Draft, and selecting North Carolina offensive guard Jonathan Cooper. The best Tar Hell offensive lineman since tackle Harris Barton was drafted 22nd overall by the 49ers in the late 80′s, Jonathan Cooper instantly upgraded this Cardinals offensive line.
Cooper racked up awards during his college career including first-team All-American selection as a senior, and All-ACC teams to go with his ACC Jacobs Blocking Trophy. With his ability to open up holes for the run and great pass protecting skill Cooper was widely considered to be the first guard to go in the draft
Jonathan does come a little undersized and will need to bulk up to handle the size of huge defensive tackles in the league , but this is nothing an NFL training regimen will not boost. He will also need to work on his blocking assignments in pass protection as that seems to be the only mark on the young man as far as intangibles go.
A great selection for the Arizona Cardinals, they did not reach on a QB they felt would not be any better than now ex Raider Carson Palmer. This selection will improve their running game, and gives their offensive line a significant boost in talent. Arizona now has a great piece to build around in the trenches that should be a presence for years to come.
