Bellator 91 airs on SPIKETV tomorrow night from the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico with perhaps their most anonymous card yet! The main event features a title defense for Light Heavyweight champion Christian M’Pumbu as he takes on the winner of last year’s summer tournament, Attila Vegh. The card also features the semi finals of this season’s Lightweight tournament as Jason Fisher meets David Rickels and Saad Awad faces off against Will Brooks.
M’Pumbu is the forgotten champion, as he did not fight at all in 2012 and was last seen losing a non title bout to veteran journeyman Travis Wiuff in way back at Bellator 55. He is undersized for the true behemoths of the division. In this match, that will not come in to play as much, as he and Vegh are both roughly the same stature.
Still, it isn’t surprising to see Vegh as the favorite at the books, coming in at around -175 with the +145 comeback on M’Pumbu. Attila is not only coming off the summer tournament win, he has won 8 in a row overall and has a distinct advantage in experience. Attila is an aggressive fighter, and after 16 months off most of the betting public has forgotten about M’Pumbu, and after such a long layoff it is difficult to not expect ring rust. We just don’t know what M’Pumbu is going to have in the ring until we see it.
In the semi finals of the season 8 Lightweight tournament, late replacement Jason Fischer is a +280 underdog over David Rickels (-350), as he steps in to replac.e the injured Russian fighter Alexander “Tiger” Sarnavskiy.
The other Lightweight bout features Will Brooks as a -360 favorite as he steps in to face Saad Awad, who pays out at +290.
The winners of the two bouts will face each other in the tournament finals later this season, with the winner of that final match earning a title fight against Michael Chandler.
