Last night at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine Bellator 93 went down. The event was headlined by the twice delayed Lightweight tournament final from season 7 between Poland’s Marcin Held and the USA’s Dave Jansen. With his win, Jansen gets $100,000 and a shot at Bellator Lightweight Champion Michael Chandler down the line.
Jansen showed solid defenses as he warded off Held’s submission attack and used ground and pound to take the bout after three hard fought rounds. His record now stands at an excellent 19-2.
The Chandler-Jansen fight later this year will be a very interesting one. We last saw Chandler in January, when he dispatched Rick Hawn in impressive fashion. Since he won the title from Eddie Alvarez, he also made short work out of Japanese veteran Akihiro Gono and upped his record to a perfect 11-0.
Jansen has gone 6-0 in Bellator after a 1-2 stint in the Zuffa run, now defunct WEC promotion. Even after impressively defeating Held, a young Polish fighter considered a submission wiz and a protege at just 23 years old, Jansen still has no wins on his resume the likes of Rick Hawn or Eddie Alvarez.
Look for Chandler to come in favored when the match is announced officially and the lines open up at the sportsbooks. The match could be scheduled for Season 9 or some time during Bellator’s summer series.
Next up for Bellator are Bellator 94 (March 28th) and 95 (April 4th), the two big events that close out season 8. The April 4th event features a fascinating judo vs judo bout as Bellator fighter Rick Hawn gets a superfight type of fight against fellow judoka, former UFC star Karo Parysian. We will take a look at that match and the season 8 tournament finals in the Middleweight, Featherweight, Light weight and Lightheavyweight divisions wrapping up on those events in the days to come.
