Boxing had some terrific moments this weekend, and none were delivered by Golden Boy’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. As expected, Alvarez delivered a 5th round stoppage of Josesito Lopez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, likely catapulting him into a big money fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr early next year. At 41-0-1, the 22 year old Mexican star is clearly the top draw from that boxing hungry country, especially after the brutal sodomy administered to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr by Sergio Martinez. If Mayweather doesnt get Pacquiao, he has been able to work with Golden Boy in the past, and the Mayweather-Alvarez fight could be the biggest fight of 2013.
Alvarez was a huge favorite against Lopez, who was coming off a KO victory of Victor Ortiz. All the questions about Ortiz’ heart were back on the table, and Lopez grabbed the biggest payday possible with the Alvarez fight. He got tooled.
Alvarez does need a step up figt, and with his current pay scale and what is around in the boxing world, look for ‘Canelo’ to be the next opponent for Floyd.
Floyd will come in at least a 3 to 1 favorite is what I predict, but Canelo has the youth and a huge Mexican backing, so the line on this fight may go haywire!
Alvarez suffers from the same criticisms as Chavez Jr, that he has been protected during his career. And if that is the case, then the MAyweather fight for Canelo will be a lot like the Martinez fight for Chavez.
Mayweather should be too fast and too skilled for Canelo. But Canelo looks like a better athlete than Chavez Jr, and he seems to have a chin beyond what Mayweather can test. His cardio is that of well, a 22 year old, which means he can go. Can he pressure the smaller Mayweather?
Canelo is already in the big money, which limits his opponents. Mayweather is the perfect choice, it will be interesting to see if he is the first to show that Floyd is fading, as all 35 year old athletes must! Ill be Canelo if he is a big enough dog on this one.
