It has been a good month for California based MMA team Alpha Male. Last weekend, Bantamweight Urijah Faber submitted Scott Jorgensen to solidify his hold on the number one contender spot in his weight class. Featherweight Chad Mendes and Flyweight Joseph Benavides did the same thing with victories last night at the UFC on FOX 7 event.
It is one of the difficulties of booking fights in the UFC. What to do when a fighter challenges for the belt and loses very definitively, but then continues to dominate the rest of the weight class. At what point will the public accept another title match?
Interestingly, despite being the most dominant of the group, it is Chad Mendes who will have to wait for another shot at Champion Jose Aldo. Aldo is booked to face Anthony Pettis in August, which means we will likely see Mendes in the octagon again before he gets a crack at Aldo. Should Pettis win, he would wait more time for a rematch with Aldo, and if Aldo wins, then he may move to Lightweight, so Mendes does not have a clear path to the title.
Faber does not face similar obstacles at Featherweight. Faber is still popular and he is on the plus 6 figure side of the pay scale, so it makes sense that he get a shot. He has also been dominant and wiped out two very good fighters since his first loss to Barao, he has bullied his way back to the top.
It is a similar scenario for Benavides at Flyweight. He should be the next contender for Demetrious Johnson’s belt, as the division is not deep in talent and he has taken everybody out.
Team Alpha male is considered one of the top MMA teams in the world, and certainly one of the premiere teams for fighters in the smaller weight classes. The truth is that UFC gold has eluded them, and their top members have all had the chance (Faber has had multiple shots and failed). thta is going to make for a very unified and motivated team in the preparation for another run.
