Chicago Cubs Go To Starter Jackson Against Surging Pirates

Chicago Cubs Look To Starter Jackson To Help Rebound Against Pirates

Chicago Cubs starter Edwin Jackson is still trying to find his groove with his new team as he is 1-6 on the season. Tonight Jackson takes the mound against Jeanmar Gomez who has had a great start this season with his new Pittsburgh Pirates team.

The Chicago Cubs are fighting to stay out of the cellar of the NL Central with a 18-27 record they are currently tied for last place with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs have gone 5-5 in their last 10 and have dropped their last three straight games. In comes Jackson sporting a 1-6 record and 5.76 ERA to try and help turn around not just his struggling season but his team’s as well.

Chicago does not have a single batter who has more than 17 plate appearances hitting .300 or better with Stalin Castro leading with 51 hits and hitting just .266 on the season. David DeJesus has had the best year at the plate for the Cubs thus far with 41 hits, 5 home runs, and 16 RBI’s. In the past seven days he has Dejesus not slowed down hitting .357.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are very much fighting the Reds and Cardinals for the top of the NL Central. After going 8-2 their last 10 games and on a three game winning-streak they are now just one game behind the second place Reds, and two games behind the leading Cardinals.

Today Jean Gomez takes the hill for the Pirates and he has been good so far this season his first year in Pittsburgh. He is currently 2-0 with a 2.78 ERA, his last game was not his best start allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits over 4 2/3 innings. Gomez does not usually pitch late in games , usually being taken out late in the fourth or fifth. However he is still young to the majors and after 32 innings a 2.78 ERA is great for just his third year in the majors over four seasons.

I’m going with Jean Gomez and the Pittsburgh Pirates in this contest over the Chicago Cubs. Pittsburgh is a solid 17-9 when playing at home while the Cubs are just 8-13 on the road, and with Edwin Jackson struggling the price is really god on the Pirates.
