The 2013 ACC Tournament will be an event in which an old powerhouse, Duke, will try to fend off a new face in college basketball this season: the Miami Hurricanes. College basketball betting should also keep an eye on a Virginia team that is squarely on the bubble.
2013 ACC Tournament Preview: Tournament Schedule
First Round – Thursday, March 14
(9) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. (8) Boston College Golden Eagles
(12) Virginia Tech vs. (5) North Carolina State Wolfpack
Georgia Tech has steadily improved this season, and since this tournament is being held in Atlanta, the Yellow Jackets should have an edge against a hard-working but deficient Boston College squad. Virginia Tech is awful. North Carolina State should have its way with the Hokies and cruise into the quarterfinals.
(10) Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. (7) Maryland Terrapins
(11) Clemson Tigers vs. (6) Florida State Seminoles
Maryland is an up-and-down team, and frankly, a massive disappointment this season. Yet, Wake Forest can’t do much of anything away from its home building. The Demon Deacons are a terrible team when they’re not playing in Winston-Salem, N.C. In the other late game on Thursday, Clemson has not been able to find much of any offense. That’s bad news against a Florida State team that doesn’t defend well, but has an elite shooter in Michael Snaer.
Quarterfinals – Friday, March 15
Georgia Tech/Boston College vs. (1) Miami Hurricanes
Virginia Tech/North Carolina State vs. (4) Virginia Cavaliers
Miami, the outright regular season champion in the ACC, has wobbled the past few weeks, and a game against hometown team Georgia Tech could get very dicey. The chances of an upset are considerable, but Miami will probably find a way to get past the Jackets, since the Hurricanes lost to Georgia Tech this past week. North Carolina State and Virginia is a toss-up game, but Virginia will be feeling the pressure of having to win if it wants to make the NCAA tournament this season. A win probably gets Virginia in, but a loss knocks Virginia out. The Cavaliers have been so unreliable from game to game this season; North Carolina State is not the picture of dependability, but it will probably win here.
Wake Forest/Maryland vs. (2) Duke Blue Devils
Clemson/Florida State vs. (3) North Carolina Tar Heels
These are lopsided matchups. Maryland has no answer for Duke at the defensive end of the floor, and the same is true for Florida State against a hot North Carolina team that surged over the final three weeks of the regular season.
Semifinals – Saturday, March 16
Projected matchups: North Carolina State vs. Miami and North Carolina vs. Duke
North Carolina State has plenty of talent; that claim has never been in question. The Wolfpack could ride a wave of confidence in this tournament and make the final, especially since Miami looks like a mentally tired team at this point. Duke owns all the matchup advantages against North Carolina. Don’t expect a young and growing UNC team to be able to stop the Blue Devils’ perimeter shooters.
Championship – Sunday, March 17
Projected matchup: North Carolina State vs. Duke
North Carolina State does not play defense well enough to handle all of Duke’s weapons. The Blue Devils gear up for this event every year, and should be favored on the betting lines to cut down the nets in Atlanta.
Pick: Duke To Win The ACC Championship
