The Alabama Crimson Tide were supposed to be playing in the 2013 SEC Championship Game in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, but the Auburn Tigers pulled off a major surprise this past Saturday to win the SEC West championship and advance to the Athens of the South for this game against the Missouri Tigers. Mizzou is the champion of the SEC East, following a tough and hard-earned win against Texas A&M this past Saturday. The Tigers from Missouri and the Tigers from the state of Alabama are evenly matched, creating a fascinating game this upcoming weekend at a neutral site.
SEC Championship Game
Missouri Tigers vs. Auburn Tigers
Saturday, December 7th
NCAA Football Odds: Auburn -1.5
Why Missouri Can Cover The Spread:
Their passing game could very realistically do a lot of damage to Auburn’s defense. Both teams in this matchup can run, but only Missouri can throw. Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall is very limited as a passer. His technique is suspect, and his accuracy is lacking. His passes often sail out of bounds over the arms of receivers. He usually does not put enough air under the ball, but throws a pass that travels in an overly direct way. Missouri, on the other hand, has a quarterback in the person of James Franklin who has really grown up this season and come into his own. Franklin is making excellent decisions with the ball. He is not bailing out of plays, and most importantly, he is not fumbling the ball when pressured, something that happened a lot to him in his previous years at Missouri.
Why Auburn Can Cover The Spread:
They have the better team. Auburn beat Alabama. The Tigers beat the giant in college football. When you beat the number one team in the nation, and when you do so after trailing by 14 points, you’ve established yourself as a very tough and hard-to-destroy team. Even if the first quarter doesn’t go well and Auburn finds itself trailing by a 10-0 or 13-3 margin, coach Gus Malzahn’s team is very capable of fighting right back. Actually, these Tigers should probably be expected to fight back. Auburn has grown so much over the course of the season. The two biggest games of the season came in November, and Auburn won both of them. This team was fortunate to win those games, but it was good enough to be in a position to benefit from a little luck. If this team can regroup and not let down its guard, it should win and cover the spread.
This game comes down to Auburn’s level of focus. Auburn just played a draining game, and the team might be just a little bit dazed from its win over Alabama. Auburn has to follow a life-changing moment with another day at the office. That could be a tough transition, but Auburn has shown so much resilience that it should be expected to get the job done.
