You’re not going to find show stopping college football betting matchups on the second Friday of the new college football season, but you will find a conference game and an all-Florida clash.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons @ Boston College Eagles
Odds: Boston College -3
These are quite possibly the two worst teams in the newly expanded 14-team Atlantic Coast Conference, although Duke might also belong in the conversation. The Demon Deacons were hardly impressive a week ago, scoring only 31 points against Presbyterian College. Boston College was not exactly sharp; it received a very tough battle from Villanova of the Football Championship Subdivision before digging out a hard-earned win in the second half. The offenses for both of these teams struggle, and the level of line play for both the Demon Deacons and the Eagles is not all that imposing. It is generally felt that home field is worth a field goal, so the fact that Boston College is a three-point favorite means that Las Vegas thinks these are even teams on the merits. If Wake Forest had been hosting this game, the Deacons probably would have been favored, and if this game had been on a neutral field, it would have been a pick ‘em game. One small note to add here is that Boston College played its opener at home, while Wake also played its opener at home. Since Wake Forest will have to travel while Boston College gets to stay at its home base for another week, it’s more likely than not that the Eagles will have fresher legs and just enough added sharpness to prevail. The Eagles are hardly a lock, but they ultimately make more sense in the grander scheme of things.
Pick: Boston College -3
Central Florida Golden Knights @ Florida International Golden Panthers
Odds: Central Florida -24.5
This game looks and feels like a rout. The linesmakers seem to agree as Central Florida is favored by more than three touchdowns and a field goal on the college football odds. UCF stormed to a big early lead last week and roughed up Akron before coasting to the finish line. The Golden Knights played on a Thursday as well, while Florida International played this past Saturday against Maryland. The Golden Panthers might be at home, but they’ve had to do more traveling than the Golden Knights, who will stay in the state of Florida for this not-so-daunting road trip. Getting two more days to rest will help UCF, while the short week should definitely hurt FIU.
One also has to say here that Florida International did not offer any real signs of being a reasonably good team in its 43-10 loss to Maryland. It’s true that Maryland was a 4-8 team last season primarily because of injuries to its quarterbacks, but even then, it’s not as though Maryland is a terrific team. The Terrapins are decent, but they’re not special. Losing so comprehensively to a team such as Maryland suggests that Florida International is going to be in for a very long year. Central Florida should win by at least 30.
Pick: Central Florida -24.5
