The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Virginia Tech Hokies are the only two teams that have ever represented the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coastal Division in the ACC Championship Game. The winner of this game historically wins the Coastal Division. This year might be different with the Miami Hurricanes making their mark on the college football world once again following a win over the Florida Gators, but say this much: The winner of this game will probably be able to join Miami as the co-favorite in the Coastal as the season moves along. This is a huge game on the football lines being played in late September.
Virginia Tech Hokies @ Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Thursday, September 26th – 7:30 PM ET
Bobby Dodd Stadium – Atlanta, GA
NCAA Football Odds: Georgia Tech -7.5
Why The Hokies Can Cover The Spread:
Their level of play last week against Marshall was not a likely indicator of how they’re going to play this time around. Virginia Tech certainly looked and acted like a team that was looking ahead to the following week when it slogged past Marshall. Moreover, that game was played in a driving rainstorm, creating weather conditions that were not conducive to crisp and precise performance, especially on the offensive side of the ball. As long as Virginia Tech’s defense is able to perform at or near its regular standards, the Hokies should limit Georgia Tech’s offensive production and create a 17-14 or 20-17 kind of game, one in which Virginia Tech’s offense will not have to make too many plays. If Virginia Tech’s offense has to carry most of the workload for this team, the Hokies are certainly going to fail, because Virginia Tech’s offense is just not an upper-tier group. However, if the defense calls the shots and sets the pace, the Hokies are going to be in just about every game they play when the fourth quarter comes around, Making just a few above-average plays on offense in important situations should be enough to get Virginia Tech a victory in this contest against Georgia Tech.
Why The Yellow Jackets Can Cover The Spread:
They’re the better team. Georgia Tech came back from a 20-7 deficit to beat North Carolina at home last week. The Yellow Jackets showed a considerable degree of resilience and patience in winning that game, because they’re not the kind of team that ordinarily comes back from double-digit deficits. Georgia Tech, as you probably know, is a running team, and not only that, but a team that has to run the ball to be effective. The triple-option offense is not an easy offense to run when facing a 13-point hole, but Georgia Tech’s defense was able to dominate North Carolina’s offense as last week’s game continued. A rugged defense is something that has been missing for Georgia Tech in recent seasons. If the Yellow Jackets can merely hold opposing teams to 20 points and nothing more, the triple option offense should be good enough for three touchdowns. Georgia Tech should certainly be able to keep Virginia Tech’s offense down in this game, and that should improve the Jackets’ odds of beating the Hokies.
Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas does not show signs of improving this season, and that’s a great reason to expect the Hokies to struggle on the road. Georgia Tech should be able to win this game by at least 10 points and cover the football spread.
Pick: Georgia Tech -7.5
