The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels a few weeks ago and seemed to have a strong position in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coastal Division. However, North Carolina has been exposed as a mediocre team, taking away from what Georgia Tech accomplished against the Tar Heels. Then, last Thursday, Georgia Tech was comprehensively outplayed by Virginia Tech. The Yellow Jackets were terrible on offense and did not establish their triple-option running attack even though Virginia Tech did not have a lot of time to prepare for it. Now, Georgia Tech faces an urgent game against Miami. The Yellow Jackets have already played two of their more important games against Coastal Division rivals, while Miami is just beginning to play ACC games. If Georgia Tech loses this game, the Jackets will find it very hard to win the Coastal and return to the ACC Championship Game.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets @ Miami Hurricanes
Saturday, October 5th – 12:30 PM ET
Sun Life Stadium – Miami, FL
NCAA Football Odds: Miami -5.5
Why The Yellow Jackets Can Cover The Spread:
Their level of frustration should translate into a revived and re-focused performance. The Yellow Jackets really couldn’t have been any worse than they were against Virginia Tech. The Hokies’ defensive front was very strong against Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets didn’t respond well to getting roughed up at the line of scrimmage. You know that Georgia Tech’s offense has been stewing all this week, aching to get back on the field and prove that it can perform really well. When athletes get embarrassed, they feel a burning desire to change the script the next time they get to perform in an important situation against a tough opponent. Miami’s defense is not as strong as Virginia Tech’s defense. This should give Georgia Tech the ability to run the ball a lot better and control the clock. Being able to run the ball should allow the Yellow Jackets to keep Miami’s potent offense off the field and reshape the balance of this contest. That should lead to at least a cover on the football spread.
Why The Hurricanes Can Cover The Spread:
They’re the better team. Georgia Tech has been all over the place this season, while Miami has shown a lot more consistency. Miami did not play very well on offense on Sept. 7 against the Florida Gators, but the Hurricanes made fewer mistakes and were able to ride out some rough patches in a very important win that has changed the way this team feels about itself. Miami has gained a lot of belief from that win, and it’s the kind of achievement that often carries over into the rest of a season. Miami head coach Al Golden has patiently recruited and built up this team over the years, dealing with NCAA sanctions in a very impressive manner. Miami knows that the ACC Coastal championship – which would be the first in the history of the program since its move to the ACC a decade ago – is very much in play. Don’t expect the Hurricanes to miss this opportunity on their home field.
Georgia Tech is just too erratic to trust. The Yellow Jackets’ triple option might well explode in this game, but the more likely bet is that Miami’s defense will contain Georgia Tech. The Hurricanes’ offense should run wild against Georgia Tech’s defense. Go with Miami on the football odds here.
