Government Chokes as Mistrial Declared in Roger Clemens Case

roger clemens trailJust how incompetent is the United States government?  Don’t answer that question.  With all that is going on in Washington with the debt ceiling talks it is obvious not many people in the United States government have a clue. That was illustrated again on Thursday as the Roger Clemens perjury trial was declared a mistrial.

U.S. District judge Reggie Walton had warned prosecutors in the Roger Clemens perjury trial about showing jurors evidence that was inadmissible but they either ignored the warnings or didn’t pay attention.  Jurors were shown evidence on Thursday that went against the judge’s orders and he declared a mistrial.

It will be at least another month before it is determined whether or not a new trial will be held.  There will be a hearing on September 2nd and then the judge will decide if a new trial is in order.

Walton was pretty fed up with the prosecution as he had to tell jurors that everyone wasted their time and then had to tell everyone that money has been wasted. “There are rules that we play by and those rules are designed to make sure both sides receive a fair trial,” Walton told the jury.

Roger Clemens didn’t speak after the ruling because he and his lawyers are under a gag order. It was obvious though that both Clemens and his attorney Rusty Hardin were very pleased with the mistrial ruling.

It is almost inconceivable that the prosecution could be so stupid.  They were showing jurors video from the 2008 testimony of Clemens before congress when Walton sent the jury out of the room. Walton was upset that the video showed Representative Elijah Cummings referring to Andy Pettitte’s conversation with his wife. “I think that a first-year law student would know that you can’t bolster the credibility of one witness with clearly inadmissible evidence,” Walton said.  The prosecution had already gone against the judge’s order in their opening statements and after the video it was clear that Walton had seen and heard enough.

The U.S. government has now butchered two cases against baseball players.  They couldn’t do anything with the Barry Bonds case and now they have totally botched the perjury case against Roger Clemens.  For gamblers at BetDSI Sportsbook it is just another example of how incompetent the U.S. government has become.
