Tonite from the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California we get a WBC Welterweight title bout between ‘Vicious’ Victor Ortiz and Josesito Lopez. As the fight approaches, Ortiz is an overwhelming -875 favorite, with the comeback for Lopez standing at +575. This is yet another in a long line of supposed big time boxing bouts with a practically unbettable linedue to one guy being such a heavy favorite. Let’s look at a few of the factors that went into the making of this fight and see if there is anything that might be an X Factor.
First of, in defense of the heavy favorite Ortiz, his original opponent was to have been Andre Berto, who he fought a war with in April of 2011, but Berto got caught doping up and Josesito Lopez was unearthed for the fight.
Most experts, including myself, are saying the same thing – Ortiz is too strong and too fast for his opponent. But hey, do the fight, grab the paycheck….
A few weeks back, Ortiz’ name surfaced around a big money fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez scheduled for September. Now Lopez has the disrespectful feeling of being look past, and sometimes the fates turn on just that type of motivation.
Because Ortiz is the owner of several stand out performances, but he also owns some history that shows he is susceptible to the mental game if you can get in his head. Marcos Maidana beat him up enough that Ortiz questioned whether he should even boxing, and in his latest fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr, Ortiz went from throwing headbutts to throwing a hugfest before Mayweather capitalized and took him out.
So Lopez has to be aggressive in the early rounds, if he can hurt Ortiz all the better, but if he cant he has to outbox him and make Ortiz think.
Whether he is capable of wither is a different story. One thing is for sure, Lopez is not of the elvel of Mayweather, Maidana or Berto, so this is probably a long shot that will not pay off.
