Ben Henderson is a top notch fighter, but there was a lot to not like about his last outing, when he dropped his belt to Anthony Pettis. Especially worrying was the seming shock Henderson was in at post fight press conferences. He seemed directionless and frankly, he didn’t seem to care about the loss of the belt or about his poor performance.
Henderson’s loss dates to August of 2013, so ring rust will not be a factor, and he competed in November in the ADCC World Submission Fighting Championships. He lost in that competition, but did manage a stand out performance. But he lost.
Henderson always seemed to be cerebral, and it is possible the loss of his title may have had an effect on his makeup.
On the other hand, Josh Thomson has to feel that this is his time. The stars are aligned for the long time veteran, who did the seemingly impossible in taking out Nate Diaz in his last UFC outing. He was fastracked for a title shot, but a Pettis injury left him with Henderson, who is a tough fight. look for Thomson to be savvy and focused enough to keep his eye on the ultimate prize, which is the title shot.
Henderson has been the beneficiary of judges decisions in the past, but Thomson has the aggression and style to turn the judges in his favor.
Bottom line is come the weigh ins and fight week interviews, if Henderson continues to sound like he is in transition, Thomson will eat him alive.
