Baseball season is back and players are still shaking the rust off as the second weekend of action gets underway. MLB betting fans will see the New York Yankees travelling to Detroit to take on the Tigers in a playoff rematch from last season. The Yankees will be looking for revenge after getting swept by the Tigers in the postseason.
Friday, 1:05 PM ET – Ivan Nova vs. Doug Fister
These two are making their 2013 debut, and Nova has never fared that well against the Tigers, going 0-1 in three games (two starts) with a 9.24 ERA. He has an 8.59 ERA at Comerica Park, even though overall, Nova has been pretty solid on the road throughout his short career and has a better ERA away from home. Fister hasn’t been lights out against the Yankees, going 1-2 in four starts with a 5.18 ERA, but he has always liked pitching Detroit going back to his days with Seattle. Fister is 10-5 in 20 career starts at Comerica Park with a 2.89 ERA.
Saturday, 4:05 PM ET – David Phelps vs. Max Scherzer
Phelps has already made an appearance in the bullpen, giving up a run in 1.1 innings with two walks and the fact that he’s in the rotation now says a lot about the Yankees’ pitching woes; while it’s too early in the season to panic just yet, it’s not something that New York fans should be encouraged by. He has made four appearances against the Tigers, going 0-1, but Phelps has a decent ERA of 1.80 in five innings of work. Scherzer hits the mound for the first time in 2013 and you won’t be afraid to take on the Yankees with a 3-1 record in four starts and an ERA of 3.42. Scherzer also has a 3.62 ERA at Comerica Park, the only “home” park he has ever known in three years in the major leagues.
Sunday, 1:05 PM ET – C.C. Sabathia (0-1, 7.20) vs. Justin Verlander (1-0, 0.00)
Sabathia is a notoriously slow starter, and he was knocked for four runs in five innings against Boston to open up the season, and his numbers have been up and down against the Tigers as the former Cy Young winner is 18-12 in 35 starts with a 4.43 ERA against them. In Detroit, Sabathia is 9-5 in 16 starts with a 4.26 ERA, but you shouldn’t expect much of him in April. On the other hand with another former Cy Young winner (as well as former MVP), Verlander tossed five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts against Minnesota, and you shouldn’t worry about the amount of innings as Detroit is likely trying to keep their ace fresh throughout the season. Verlander is 5-4 in 13 starts against the Yankees with a 3.74 ERA in his career, but he is almost lights out in Detroit, posting a 66-25 in 113 starts at Comerica Park with a 3.00 ERA. Any time a pair of former Cy Young winners get together, it’s a special occasion, so keep your eye on the betting lines for this matchup.
