MLB Mid-Season Preview: Cincinnati Reds

MLB Mid-Season Preview: Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds are staying competitive in the NL Central but failing to post a winning record on the road is definitely hampering their status. At 62-51 their record at home is exceptional at 34-19 but when away from Cincinnati are 29-32. Currently 6.5 games behind the Pirates, Reds have some work to do and their 3-7 record over their last ten games certainly have not helped.

Even with ace Johnny Cueto on and off the disabled list this year the Cincinnati certainly have the pitching ability to turn this season around and make a push for the playoffs. Mat Latos has been great posting a 11-3 record with a 3.21 ERA while Mike Leake has also been excellent with a 10-5 record and 2.94 ERA. After those two the talent does drop off quite a bit with Homer Bailey who is 6-10 with a 3.55 ERA but he is still a very solid mid rotation guy.

Moved into the rotation this year has been the young Tony cingrani and he has done nothing but excel. So far this year Cingrani is 5-1 with a 3.05 ERA and has only allowed 57 hits in 82 innings pitched which is incredible pitching. Bronson Arroyo is another solid guy in the rotation he is currently 9-9 with a 3.62 ERA. Reliever Aroldis Chapman made the All-Star team this year and currently has a 3.05 ERA making 26 saves on 30 opportunities.

First baseman Joey Votto is the best pure hitter on the team and is currently sporting a .323 average with 17 home runs and 52 RBI’s he’s also taken 85 walks this season. Right fielder Jay Bruce is a swing for the moon type player with 23 home runs and 135 strikeouts over 445 at bats. Not a whole lot of speed on this team as center fielder Shin-Soo Choo leads the team in stolen bags with 12. Choo is also putting up respectable numbers at the plate with a .284 average, 15 home runs, and 35 RBI’s.

The Cincinnati Reds are packed with the talent it takes to make a push from middle of the division to playoff contention. They have a remarkable pitching staff that can take over games , they just need the bats to start picking up to break out of this current slump and make up some ground in the division.
