MLB Mid-Season Review: Atlanta Braves
Post All-Star break the Atlanta Braves sit on top of the NL East with a 61-45 record playing great baseball at home with a 35-15 record. On the road they sit at 26-30 and continue to play solid baseball past the break putting up solid offensive numbers and displaying good pitching.
Starter Mike Minor has been a solid ace this season with a 10-5 record sporting a 2.89 ERA he has struck out 128 batters thus far and allowed just 44 ER’s over 137 innings. Minor consistently puts in quality outings going at least six innings of solid pitching. The rest of the rotation has benefitted from some great run support as no other pitcher on the Braves is even close to the production of Minor.
Tim Hudson was pitching wonderfully till his gruesome ankle injury this week. Before the injury Hudson picked up 8 wins with a 3.97 ERA striking out 95 batters this season. Kris Medlen has been spotty with a 7-10 record he has kept his ERA under 4 with a 3.74 so he has been productive.
Injuries are taking their toll on the Braves with Hudson gone and also Jordan Walden from the bullpen. Walden before heading to the minors to rehab was 4-1 with a 2.57 ERA over 35 innings pitched. The Braves also recently placed reliever Luis Ayala on the disabled list due to an anxiety disorder and called up David Carpenter from Triple A ball. Carpenter in his 38 MLB innings pitched this season has earned a 3-1 record with a 3.28 ERA.
Second baseman Dan Uggla continues to swing for the moon on every pitch and is currently leading the Braves with 21 homers. Unfortunately for Atlanta Uggla strikes out a lot in earning those home runs and 51 RBI’s , he’s currently batting only .202 with 129 strikeouts.
Third baseman Chris Johnson has the best average on the team hitting .339 with six home runs and 36 RBI’s. First baseman Freddie Freeman is one of their most effective offensive weapons with a .299 average, 11 home runs, and 65 RBI’s. The Braves are good baserunners , good at putting people in scoring position with three guys who have five or more steals on the season.
