We have thrown three straight winning selections out there now with Atlanta-Florida easily going Over to cash our last selection. That roll has our season-long, running bankroll up to +$1500 with a 5-2 record since starting up this blog posting after the All-Star Break (for the sake of money management and measures we are using a $500 unit bet). Saturday I am going to come out with a nice dog play in what appears to me to be a 50-50 proposition as the Tampa Bay Rays take on the mighty New York Yankees in a 1:10 PM Pacific start time at Yankee Stadium. BetDSI Sportsbook has opened the Yankees as a -140 favorite on their overnight line. Remember that BetDSI reverts to a graduated-dime line starting 7:30 AM each day, so the price on the Rays may get better, but let’s call it Tampa Bay +120 as an official play.
Today we have solid young starter Jeremy Hellickson getting the start for Tampa Bay while Phil Hughes goes for the Yanks. The pitching certainly seems to favor the Rays here and since a slow start to the season Tampa has shown they still belong up there with New York.
Hellickson has faced the Yankees before and comes into this one with a 2-0 mark against them in his short career. Back in July he won a 3-2 decision at home while working 7 innings and giving up just 5 hits and 2 earned runs coupled with 7 strike-outs. Both New Yorkruns that day came via Robinson Cano’s 2-run home run.
Righty Phil Hughes brings his 2-4 record and ugly 7.11 ERA into today’s start and it only gets worse when we add in his 0-2, 9.16 ERA at Yankee Stadium. He last made an appearance August 7th when he pitched just 1/3 inning and gave up an earned run at Boston.
Yes the Yankees are the big money, big market team but little ole Tampa Bay has proven in recent years that they can definitely compete with the big boys. Heading into Saturday Tampa has won 8 of their past 10 games, with the red-hot Rays having won 5 straight. I usually look at the home-away splits and while we expect the Yankees to have a strong record as hosts (39-24), Tampa Bay is impressive on the road with a 33-26 record so far this season.
There just isn’t much to choose between the two sides right now and with the solid starter Hellickson going for a hot Tampa Bay side I’ll take anything above +120 with the road dog in this spot. Officially we’ll call it Tampa Bay Rays +120 over the New York Yankees as my wager at BetDSI Sportsbook.
