Back at things with our second play off the MLB All-Star Break on Sunday and taking a big swing at the plate today as the Kansas City Royals face the Minnesota Twins at Target Field in Minneapolis. The two American League Central Division sides meet at 11:10 AM with the well-travelled Felipe Paulino getting the ball for the Royals while Brian Duensing will be tossing for the Twins. BetDSI Sportsbook has opened the overnight line with the Twins a -135 favorite today.
The Royals showed a lot of life early this season as their well-stocked minor league system slowly pays dividends for the big club, but “slowly” may be the key there. Enough competitive spirit was shown by Kansas City early this season that the team brought up star prospect Eric Hosmer to man first base and shortly thereafter brought in Mike Moustakas to handle the other corner infield spot. With their entire outfield of Alex Gordon, Melky Cabrera and Jeff Francoeur playing as well as ever in their careers, Kansas City had hope, but their consistent inability on the road has beat the team back to its familiar spot at the bottom of the division.
Minnesota went the opposite route, with injuries stopping them right off the bat, and recently pulling it together as a team. With leader Joe Mauer healthy and back in the fold, Delmon Young back from injury and on fire, Japanese import Tsuyoshi Nishioka coming off a broken leg to show signs of being the hitter they had hoped, and Michael Cuddyer swinging an All-Star caliber big stick, the Twins are creeping back into contention.
Today I will be betting the Twins behind Brian Duensing as the price seems right. Duensing is talented lefty who has started to round back into the form that saw him post a 10-3 record with a sparkling 2.62 ERA last season. I like the current look of the pitcher, how the line-up is getting it together piece-by-piece and the scrappy Twins in general. They have an 18-12 mark within the division and should pad that today.
It seems like a small price to pay with the home side playing as well as they are and I’ll be personally investing in this one: Minnesota Twins -135
