After stumbling with my last pick on the dog Rays visiting those damn Yanks, our season-long, running bankroll sits at +$1000 with a 5-3 record since starting up this blog posting (for the sake of money management and measures we are using a $500 unit bet). Tuesday I am hitting right back on a nice home dog as the St. Louis Cardinals are in Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates at 4:05 PM Pacific at PNC Park. BetDSI Sportsbook has opened the Cardinals a big -155 favorite on their overnight line. Remember that BetDSI reverts to a graduated-dine line starting 7:30 AM each day, so the price on the Bucs may be better than the +135 we are taking right now.
Chris Carpenter still logs a bunch of innings for the Cardinals but isn’t quite the dominant pitcher he once was. His ERA has been on the rise for three straight years and he did give up 4 earned runs on 10 hits the last time he facedPittsburgha few weeks ago. On the season the veteran righty is just 5-6 on the road with an unimpressive 4.48 ERA.
The Pirates are a much improved team and their pitching has been one of the big surprises leading to their early success this season – notably today’s starter Jeff Karstens and his team-leading 3.04 ERA. In direct contrast toSt. Louisace Chris Carpenter, Karstens’ ERA has got better for three consecutive seasons. In his 3 career starts versus the Cardinals, Karstens is 1-1 with a tidy 1.40 ERA
I think we are getting an inflated price here due to the Cardinals reputation as being one of the better teams in baseball and due to the perception that Chris Carpenter is still a dominant ace. Road opponents have smacked him around to the tune of a .289 Batting Average Against and the Pirates are a better, scrappy group this season. Playing within the divisionPittsburghis 25-23 as well.
A Brand Name team and Brand Name pitcher leads to an inflated price here on the traveling Cardinals. I’ll be betting Pittsburgh Pirates +135 over the St. Louis Cardinals as my official wager at BetDSI Sportsbook.
