Last Thursday, at an insignificant venue somewhere in the midwest, Bellator 86 kicked off their welterweight tournament for season 8. I went 3-1 picking the winners, as Brent Weedman, Ben Saunders, Doug Lima and Raul Amaya all were victorious and advanced forward into the semi finals. According to the BellatorFC.com website, Lima will get Weedman and Amaya will face Saunders in the quarterfinals, which are scheduled for roughly 1 month from now on a show to be determined. Let’s look at the odds there.
The odds on favorite to win the entire tournament is Lima, who has a Bellator tournament win under his belt already. As a result, Lima already has battled welterweight champion Ben Askren, going five full rounds with him but not giving him much.
Weedman is a tough out, and has shown improvement in his Bellator career, however he is unlikely to have enough to take Lima out in the semi finals. A Weedman win would likely please Bellator, as it would shake things up, but when the lines come out, it will be Lima who is favored.
On the other side of the bracket, Saunders is going to be favored going against Amaya. amaya came out and won a crowd pleasing fire fight in the opening round, but he will be facing a guy with a lot more experience and size in Saunders.
Saunders versus Lima is probably the finals that we are looking at in the Bellator welterweight division. Saunders is one of the biggest 170 lbers you will see, but that has not translated into tournament victories in Bellator, as this is his 3rd attempt to capture a tourney title. Saunders is going to have to show improvement in order tot take out Lima, wh is a high skill opponent with a revved up motor.
