The newly minted World Series of Fighting walks into the UFC’s backyard of Las Vegas, Nevada on November 3rd with their inaugural show. Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino will host the show, which features a heavyweight battle between veterans Andrei Arlovski and Devin Cole as it’s main event. The card also features former UFC fighter Miguel Torres, several members of the Gracie family and former pro wrestler Bobby Lashley, though the opponents remain unnamed. It will be interesting to see how the new group fills these fights, as MMA seems to be going through a period where the talent pool is not enough.
The new group is tapping a lot of the talent that is not signed by Bellator or the UFC, and that may be a bad sign. There is a reason some of this talent is not booked by the big leagues, but you have to take a chance I guess. There are a lot of holes in the makeup of the show however, so here is to hoping it does not become another cancellation.
It will be interesting to see where the odds are set for the main event between Arlovski and Cole. Cole is currently 20-9-1 and scheduled to fight in early October for a different league, so it wont be until after the October 6th, Florida CFA 8 card that we will know for sure if he will fight. Call that bad sign number one.
Arlovski looked to have added a few new facets in his last outing, his 4th fight with Tim Sylvia at the Asian event ONE FC.
One competitive fight announced is the lightweight tilt between Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante and John Gunderson. Cavalcante was once considered one of the top lightweights in the world, however he has gone 2-5-2 in his last 9 outings and is out of the picture as far as being in the top 10. Gunderson washed out of the UFC in 2010 and has 50 fights on the books, so he could even be favored in the bout.
Pro Wrestler Bobby Lashley continues to languish in his MMA career, as he was recently beaten by jobber James Thompson. We will see who he fights, though he is unlikely to accept anyone but the most basic opponents as he tries to make something of his worthless career.
Below is the card as it stands today:
- Andrei Arlovski vs. Devin Cole
- Miguel Torres vs. TBA
- Gregor Gracie vs. Tyson Steele
- Josh Burkman vs. Gerald Harris
- Brian Cobb vs. Ronys Torres
- Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante vs. John Gunderson
