Group C will be decided on Monday with Ireland playing Italy while Croatia battles Spain. Ireland has been eliminated so it will come down to the other three teams for the two quarterfinal spots out of Group C. Let’s look at both of these Euro 2012 matches for Monday.
Croatia vs. Spain (ESPN)
The top spot in Group C will be decided on Monday with the winner of this game advancing into the quarterfinals. It is possible that both teams will make it to the next round. More likely though is that Spain wins this match and takes the top spot. Croatia has played well but it all could be for naught as if they lose this game as expected they will finish with four points while Spain will finish with seven points. Italy can finish with five points if they defeat Republic of Ireland. Spain looks to be rounding into top form as they dominated Ireland 4-0 on Thursday as Fernando Torres scored twice. Spain easily could have scored more if not for Ireland goaltender Shay Given who played well in defeat.
Ireland vs. Italy (ESPN 2)
Italy needs a win and they are probably into the quarterfinals of Euro 2012. They would definitely make it with a win as long as the Croatia vs. Spain game doesn’t end in a draw. If that does happen then all three teams would finish with five points each and it would go to a tiebreaker. Italy had their chance to make Monday’s match irrelevant but they let a 1-0 lead slip away in their 1-1 draw with Croatia on Thursday. Italy has had a lack of offense in Euro 2012 as they have scored just two goals in their two matches. They should do better against an Ireland team that has been eliminated.
We like both Spain and Italy to win on Monday in their Euro 2012 matches and advance out of Group C. Croatia has been a nice story in the group but we just can’t see them beating Spain and as unimpressive as Italy has been we can’t see them losing to Ireland.
