UFC 158, scheduled for Montreal, Canada on March 1th 2013 and headlined by Georges St Pierre‘s welterweight title defense against Nick Diaz has added another main event caliber tilt in the weight class as Carlos Condit rematches Rory MacDonald. The first match apparently left a bad taste in MacDonald’s mouth, as Condit was behind on thecards when he earned the stoppage using a flurry of strikes with just seconds left on the clock. Now he gets his chance.
Condit is coming off a solid performance against champion Georges St Pierre, one where he seemed to have a chance at finishing in the third round, but let it slip away. Despite it being St Pierre’s comeback after 19 months, Condit forced a fight out of St Pierre like no other fighter has and he deserves credit.
MacDonald too, was impressive in his last outing, bludgeoning BJ Penn for three rounds to send the hall of famer into retirement. After the bout during the post fight interview in the octagon, MacDonald challenged Condit to the rematch. He wants revenge against the only man that has beaten him.
It doesnt mean much come fight time, but the interview made it painfully obvious that MacDonald is still just a kid and that if things continue to go well for him we will be talking about him in MMA for the next 15 years.
Condit watched the challenge, and reportedly found it a bit funny and awkward as well. But he is psyched up for the fight and has the experience of the first match to help him in this encounter. Condit s confident.
Where will the line come in when the sportsbooks put a number out there? I suspect that will all the hype he has been generating, that MacDonald may come in a slight favorite.
This match is likely to come down to experience, and Condit has a wealth of it over MacDonald. The one time macDonald had a rough patch in a fight, Condit took him out. He has never come from behind to win. Granted because he has not had to, but if you consider that Condit has a very complete game and an unorthodox attack, Condit will be making the adjustments necessary to win the fight. MacDonald seems to feel he was somehow wronged in the first fight, and he is more likely to try to do the same things that saw him win the first two rounds.
And I dont think that will work with Condit. If Carlos Condit is the dog in this fight, I will take that bet.
