Patrick Cote may be asked to have a seat on the UFC bench with another loss this weekend.

The BETDSI Sportsbook put up Prop bets on which fighters might be cut by the UFC after this weekend’s UFC 158 event scheduled for Montreal, Canada.  The UFC made news last month by cutting more than a dozen fighters, and UFC President Dana White talked about more cut contracts to come.  Let’s look at the odds BETDSI has put up on some of the fighters from this weekend’s card:

YES- FLETCHER GETS CUT  -300
NO- FLETCHER NOT CUT  +200

YES- RICCI GETS CUT  +450
NO- RICCI NOT CUT  -900

YES- VOELKER GETS CUT  +160
NO- VOELKER NOT CUT  -220

YES- COTE GETS CUT  +140
NO- COTE NOT CUT  -200

YES- ROOP GETS CUT -150
NO- ROOP NOT CUT  +100

YES- DURAN GETS CUT  +140
NO- DURAN NOT CUT  -200

The first thing that jumps out when you see the odds listed, is that generally, those fighters are on the lower end of the UFC pay scale.  One of the factors that goes into cutting a guy like a Jon Fitch (cut last month) was that he well paid.  So factor that in, fighters on the bubble are more likely to take short notice fights etc. and if they are cheap to keep on contract, maybe the axe does not swing.

However, let’s look at the first fight they set odds for.  It is right on as this would mark Colin Fletcher’s second loss in a row, and he is less appealing than Ricci.  Ricci also would make 2 losses in a row, but he is considered more of a prospect.  nevertheless a cut of Ricci to allow him to hone his skills on the B circuit for a few fights is very possible.

The match between Bobby Voelker and Patrick Cote could be seen as basically a loser gets cut match.    Voelker may have a better case to stick around off a loss, as it is his UFC debut but he comes in with a 3 fight winning streak in Strikeforce.  Meanwhile, Cote has been consistently flat in recent outings.  If Cote takes a loss after dropping down a weight clas, he could very well be gone.

In the last bout, Duran is 1-2 in his last 3 outings, and Roop is 1-3 in his last four.  Basically this is a loser gets cut match, however there is a saving grace for Duran.  Dana White has expressed dismay at the UFC’s failed efforts to really break huge in the Latin markets, and keeping a latino like Duran around at a good price may be part of a long term vision.  Roop has no such saving grace, and a loss puts him at about .500 for his career.  Roop is dead in the water with a loss.
