Could the San Diego Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs both be considering firing their head coaches very shortly? It wouldn’t surprise anyone. The Chargers, who were supposed to be a playoff contender, have lost three of four including a bitter 7-6 loss in Cleveland last week. As for the Chiefs, they’ve been coming apart at the seams since the regular season kicked off and they are just buying time until ownership starts handing out pink slips.
The two troubled teams meet up on Thursday Night Football in Week 9.
Kansas City Chiefs @ San Diego Chargers
NFL Betting Odds: Chargers -9.5
How The Chiefs Can Win
Short of praying, there may not be much the Chiefs can do to win this game. They could always hand the ball off as much as possible to Jamaal Charles, but they usually do that and then go away from it. Matt Cassel gets the starting nod as Brady Quinn has a head injury, but really, how much of a difference will that make? The defense is playing terrible, head coach Romeo Crennel is well past his honeymoon period after replacing Todd Haley last year and the fans are getting incredibly restless. Something needs to happen in Kansas City and soon, because the Chiefs are 1-6 now and they’ve barely looked like winning any games. Leading the league in turnovers won’t help, either.
How The Chargers Can Win
The Chargers have their own problems as head coach Norv Turner is reportedly on a week-to-week basis, and Philip Rivers isn’t doing any better. The Chargers have lost three straight since beating the Chiefs 37-20 in Week 4, but losing 7-6 in Cleveland to a bad Browns team may be the straw that broke the camel’s back and a loss to the Chiefs would probably spell the end of Turner’s reign in San Diego. The Chargers don’t really do anything well, Rivers doesn’t have many targets in the passing game, their ground game is inconsistent and the defense is suspect against the pass. Their only hope is that they’re a better football team than Kansas City, and even if they are, it isn’t by much.
Outlook And Pick
As bad as the 3-4 Chargers are, they’re still favored by nine points at home over the Chiefs, who have lost three of their last five against the Chargers, but have covered in three of those games as well. In San Diego, the Chargers have won four of the last five, but have only covered twice.
It’s a lot to ask of the Chiefs to cover in this game and pride is at stake because they’ve been putrid in 2012. On Thursday Night Football in primetime, this is their chance to prove to fans that they’re not all that bad…but they just might be. This could be similar to San Francisco’s beatdown of Arizona on Monday Night Football in which the Cardinals proved they weren’t ready for the big stage yet, and Kansas City could be headed down the same road. San Diego isn’t good, but they’re at least 10 points better than the Chiefs, especially at home, so roll with the Chargers on Thursday night.
Pick: Chargers -9.5
