NFL Betting Predictions: Minnesota Vikings at Carolina Panthers
This Sunday at 1pm Eastern, two rookie QB’s face off as Christian Ponder and the Minnesota Vikings (1-6) travel to take on Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers (2-5). BetDSI Sportsbook current Live Lines show the Panthers as a -3 point favorite over the Vikings.
Last the Vikings were competitive in their loss to the defending superbowl champion Green Bay Packers. More of this had to do with RB Adrian Peterson busting out for 175 yards and a TD, than with their rookie QB Christian Ponder. Ponder showed some promise in his rookie debut however completion rate was not one of them, throwing just 13 completions on 32 attempts, 219 yards, 2 TD’s, and 2 INT’s. It’s fair enough to say he clearly is not at Donovan McNabb’s level, however with the season all but packed in for the Vikings, it is good to throw the rookie QB under fire and get some very important experience under his belt.
The Vikings defense was shelled for 33 points by the Packers last week, and have been lit up for most of this season. The lowest total this defense has allowed in a game this year was 10 points by the Cardinals, apart from that it has been ugly. DE Jared Allen has been on an absolute tear, so far this season he has 11.5 sacks, which most NFL players don’t close to accumulating in a whole year. With the help of Allen’s ridiculous sack total, the Vikings as a defensive unit have 21 total sacks, the D also has 6 interceptions, and 6 forced fumbles to their credit.
Carolina Panther fans have had alot to cheer for this year even though sitting at a 2-5 record. Untill their week 5 loss to the Falcons, the Panthers had not lost a game by more than a field goal this year. Rookie QB Cam Newton has played sensational, and with his 16 yard TD run last week against the Redskins, he tied a benchmark set for rookie rushing scores by a QB since the merger of the NFL. ( 8 by Eric Hiple). Last week in the Carolina win against the Redskins Newton arguably had his best week yet. He looked great throwing the ball for 18 passes on 23 attempts, a really high 78% completion rate, 256 yards, a TD, no mistakes (Int’s). Oh, and he also ran the ball 10 times for 59 yards and a TD!
This Carolina Panthers defense is pitiful, if they could keep any kind of points off the board they would have a nice record with the way their rookie QB has been playing. Take away DE Charles Johnson’s 6 sacks, you would be taking away half of this team’s total sack output for the season.
My Prediction: You know what you are getting with Panthers rookie QB Cam Newton. You are getting a QB that has lit up scoreboards, and kept games close all year, despite his awful defense. With Vikings rookie QB Christian Ponder you don’t know what you are getting for sure, but taking his first game into account he does not look very accurate and will have growing pains.
Also remember this is a Vikings team that was really bad before Ponder took over, and he is a downgrade from Donovan McNabb atm. I would jump on Carolina on the moneyline.
