NFL Season Preview: Atlanta Falcons Have Sights Set On Super Bowl
The Atlanta Falcons look to build upon their 2012 season with their sights set on the Super Bowl in 2013. Atlanta went 13-3 last season to win the NFC South eventually falling 28-24 to the 49ers in the NFC Championships.
Scary is that Atlanta on paper looks like an improved team for 2013 with TE Tony Gonzalez stating he will stay out of retirement another year and the addition of a solid draft. The core of the team remains mostly the same and they have managed to upgrade at spots they feel needed them the most.
No position on the Falcons roster needed an overhaul more than the cornerback role. With the release of Dunta Robinson and departure of Brent Grimes via free agency, the Falcons looked to improve their pass defense heavily this season with the selection of cornerbacks Desmond Trufant and Robert Alfordin the first two rounds. Grimes could be the biggest loss they had via free agency but with the selection of four defensive backs overall in this years draft including the first round selections it appears they have improved at the position.
They did end up cutting defensive end John Abrahams who had most his sacks against unimpressive opponents but still could get to the QB. The Falcons ended up grabbing his replacement in ex-Giants Osi Umenyiora who if still has something left in the tank will be a great addition.
A huge upgrade made by Atlanta comes with the free agency signing of ex-Rams running back Steven Jackson. It remains to be seen if Michael Turner can find another team this off-season, it looks like his career in the league could be over and grabbing Jackson will once again give them a threat in the running game.
It looks like the Atlanta Falcons are looking at another year on top of the NFC South unless the Saints with return of head coach Sean Peyton can get it together and challenge them. Now all QB Matt Ryan and head coach Mike Smith needs to do is turn the corner and bring this team to the Super Bowl.
