It was a bit unfortunate to end Week One 1-1-1 as the Arizona Cardinals line dropped to -6 1/2 which would have qualified us as a winner instead of Push, and then the New York Giants line plummeted as the G-Men were dropping like flies due to injuries as game day approached. Still, there was no harm, no foul opening week breaking even and we come back with three more plays for NFL Week Two.
10:00 Pacific: Kansas City Chiefs 45 vs. Detroit Lions -7.5, at Ford Field
It was only opening week but the Kansas City Chiefs looked terrible in coughing up the ball and making mistakes all day to hand the victory over to the visiting Buffalo Bills. Full credit to Buffalo for capitalizing but this betting line seems to be an over-reaction to Kansas City looking as bad as they did. Look for a ton of RB Jamal Charles for the Chiefs as they control the clock and eat up yards versus Detroit. While the Lions have a solid defense and strong offense, they simply cannot be laying more than a touchdown in this spot. Let’s not forget the Chiefs are much the same as the team that won 10 games last season.
I am wagering on Kansas City Chiefs +7 1/2
1:15 Pacific: San Diego Chargers 53.5 vs. New England Patriots -6 1/2 at Gillette Stadium
This is another case where we have an over-reaction to the first week of the NFL season in my opinion. Yes the New England Patriots will score a lot of points this season, but I have a feeling we won’t see QB Tom Brady go for over 500 yards here and the Pats ground game isn’t overly impressive. Chargers bring a balanced attack and this game will have a much slower pace than the Patriots Monday Night track meet at Miami. Last season the Pats were a bend-but-don’t-break defense and I get the sense they will be much the same this season, giving up yards but not bunch of points. San Diego defense is still one of the best in the league. The Chargers surrendered the fewest yards per game in the league last season including the fewest passing yards.
Under 53.5 is my bet.
Teaser Time: Kansas City Chiefs +14.5 with Cleveland-Indianapolis Over 32.5
I covered the Kansas City rationale above, and will add the Cleveland Browns vs. Indianapolis Colts going Over 32.5 total points to complete my Teaser. The Cleveland offense looked much improved in preseason and I expect young QB Colt McCoy to play well here. The Browns have the punishing type of ground game gives the Colts trouble and RB Peyton Hillis should have a big day. Indianapolis will be better as QB Kerry Collins now has had some time to get acquainted with his new teammates and system. Both teams figure to move the ball here and the Over looks like a great compliment to my Kansas City selection.
