NY Mets Zack Wheeler To Start The Opening Series Against Phillies in Second Half Of Season
New York Mets will send Zack Wheeler, who is red hot, to the mound to start off the series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Taking the hill for Philadelphia will be Cole Hamels who with the Phillies are a small favorite at home in the series opener between the two.
Zack Wheeler has been pitching really good in his first five starts of the season since being brought up from the minors. Wheeler’s last two games resulted in wins allowing just one run in each of the contests including a three hit performance over seven innings on the road against the Giants. He is now 3-1 with a nice 3.54 ERA.
The Mets have some hitters on their squad including David Wright who is doing everything you could ask of a player batting .306, with 14 home runs, 46 RBI’s, 49 walks, and 15 stolen bases. Marlon Byrd is leading the team in homers with 16 which helped him get 54 RBI’s pre all-star break, his 5 hits is the most on the team in the last three games along with catcher John Buck.
Cole Hamels has had a rough season at 4-11, but his Philies are only 5.5 games behind Atlanta while on a 7-3 record over their last ten, and on a three game winning streak. Also Hamels has been turning it around his last three games giving up just four earned runs over 23 innings over the three outings.
Leading the Phillies in batting average (with a 100 at bats or more) is center fielder Ben Revere who currently sports a .305 average. While Dominic Brown leads the team in home-runs with an impressive 24 in the first half of the season. Delmon Yooung over the last four games is batting .300 with two runs knocked in.
I really am torn on this one as Cole Hamels has had good stuff on the mound his last three performances, however Zack Wheeler has been more consistent in his short sample size this seaosn. I’m going to go with Wheeler and the Mets at home due to the young Wheelers consistency on the hill.
