Orioles And Yankees Continue To Battle For Wild Card Berth
Yesterday the New York Yankees made another stride to a wild card berth with beating the Baltimore Orioles 2-0 with Ivan Nova pitching a 3 hit shut out gem. Tonight the Yanks have a shot as pushing even closer to the playoffs with another win, and the Orioles have a chance to right the ship and stay in the wild card race themselves.
Taking the hill for the Yankees is left handed hurler Andy Pettitte who is 10-9 on the season with a 4.05 ERA. Pettitte has been putting in some great work over his last 10 appearances with a 5-3 record and 3.55 ERA over that time. They will need him to continue his solid outings today and into the end of the season for the Yankees to continue their wild card push.
New York was hitting well yesterday against the O’s but not cashing in men on base with 7 total hits but only 2 runs scored. Center fielder Brett Gradner had two hits and a run and first basemen Lyle Overbay also had two hits. Second baseman Robinson Cano has been so clutch as of late and continued that yesterday with a home run that cashed in two runs to win them the game with Nova’s great pitching performance.
Taking the mound for the Baltimore Orioles is left handed pitcher Wei-Yin Chen who is 7-7 with a 3.76 ERA on the season. He has been a spotty his past 10 games on the mound with a 5-4 record and 4.00 ERA which has forced the Orioles into optioning him to the minors after this next start. In Chen’s last appearance, his shortest one of his career at just 3.2 innings, he was shelled for 8 earned runs off 8 hits which didn’t help his chances to stay in the majors till seasons end.
Baltimore was lucky to not go hit-less yesterday the offense was so bad with just three total hits on the contest. Third baseman Manny Machado, left fielder Nate McLouth, and catcher Matt Wieters all notched a hit but no one behind them could capitalize. The Orioles only struck out five total times in the game so it was a lot of great control and location selection by Nova to help his team get easy outs.
The New York Yankees at home are coming in a little higher priced than the Baltimore Orioles in this match-up but it really isn’t a big price to lay on a team that is hot. While I think Baltimore’s starter Chen will try his best to put in a solid performance to make his statement he deserves to stay in the majors you can’t help but notice his terrible last appearance. I like the Yankees at home again in this game.
