The Philadelphia Phillies are badly in need of something to get them going. World Series favorites before the season at the sportsbook, the Phillies are languishing in last place in the National League East. Let’s see what we can find to inspire the Phillies baseball team.
Cheers and Jeers
There have been a lot more jeers this season from MLB fans toward the Phillies than cheers as Philadelphia has really struggled despite having a pitching staff that includes Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee. When things start going south the fans will start to let players hear about it. Sometimes the MLB fans will encourage the team by chanting or starting the wave or start stomping their feet. Philadelphia sports fans are another breed though.
Worst Sports Fans
In a poll last year in GQ magazine, the Philadelphia sports fans were voted the worst sports fans in the United States. Fans of the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team were voted worst while fans of the Philadelphia Eagles were voted second worst. The Philly fans are known to throw bottles, hurl insults and boo their own team unmercifully.
From First to Worst
The Phillies in the first month and a half of this season have looked nothing like the team that had the best record in the league a year ago. It has gotten so bad that manager Charlie Manuel ripped into his team for their lackluster play. “Something needs to change,” pitcher Cliff Lee said, “We need someone to shake it up and get us back on track to being the team we know we can be.” The Phillies have the potential to turn things around with some great pitchers like Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee and a lineup that should get better once Ryan Howard returns from injury.
When you have a pitching staff that includes Halladay, Lee and Cole Hamels there should be a lot to inspire you but so far this season nothing has worked. We know something that should work though. Let’s see if this week’s winner will inspire the Phillies to play much better baseball.
