Tonight the Pittsburgh Pirates will try to end a two game streak with a win over the lowly Florida Marlins. Taking the hill for the Pirates will be Charlie Morton who will be facing Tom Koehler who will be taking the mound for the Marlins.
The Pirates are currently 60-41 and are just two and a half games behind St. Louis and will be hitting the road tonight with a solid 28-23 record away from home. Charlie Morton who is getting the nod tonight is 2-2 in his seven starts with a 3.35 ERA. Morton won his last contest allowing three runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.
Pittsburgh will need to pick up their bats if they wish to make up these two and a half games and overtake St. Louis for first. Yesterday they struck out 11 times in a shut out by Miami with Alvarez Henderson allowing just two hits over six scoreless innings.
The Miami Marlins are deep in the basement of the NL East with a 39-62 record and with the NY Mets the closest to them in the division with 46 wins, it looks the Marlins may stay in the cellar for awhile. Starting tonight for Miami is Tom Koehler who is 2-5 in 11 starts with a 4.38 ERA. In his last performance Koehler won after allowing one run on eight hits and no walks with seven strikeouts over seven innings against the Rockies.
Miami was hitting really good yesterday with eight hits including a home run by right fielder Giancarlo Stanton who had two hits and two base on balls. Catcher Jeff Mathis also had two hits and managed to get on base twice from being walked. If Miami keeps on hitting the ball like yesterday they can give a starting pitcher and bullpen fits.
Price looks too high on the Pittsburgh Pirates here, without a great pitcher on the mound and trouble hitting the ball yesterday I look to Miami at nice odds after hitting so well last game. Take the Miami Marlins at good odds over the Pirates who are struggling at the moment.
