OK. Ronda Rousey is going to have to back it up in the ring, but I am ready to jump on her bandwagon right now. Considering that I have played a part in growing women’s MMA as a matchmaker over the last decade, Rousey is a breath of fresh air. She is an outsider with a resume that gets your attention, and now she is showing she isn’t going to back down from a Twitter fight. Seriously Chael Sonnen, watch out you may have met your match for trash talking!
When I saw Rousey’s quote aimed at ‘Cyborg’ Santos I laughed so hard that the physical reaction felt like I was projectile vomiting and laying down a porcelain splitter on the other end, all at the same time. This is what she had to say -
“you don’t just have a dick, you are a dick for posting that picture of Gina, you cheater”
It may sound funny to say, but if the girl can back it up, then this is good for the sport of women’s MMA!
Some outside blood, and a deepening of the talent pool was needed, and Rousey is all that. Let’s face it – the women have put on some very compelling matches over the years, even one’s some observers may not know about. Take Molly Helsel versus Carina Damm, or Molly versus Reina Cordoba in Costa Rica. Molly is a warrior. Look at Tara Larosa taking on Amanda Buckner, or any of the battles that Jeff Osborne put on over the years at HOOKnSHOOT. Japan’s Tama Chan always brings an entire show!
The top women have fought all over the world, in MMA, ADCC Submission Grappling and under a myriad of rules, and the top tier of women started to get to know each other, to be friends and to be peers. It is one of the reasons Gina Carano was seen as an outsider. She shook things up. Now Rousey can do the same. It can only be good for the growth of the sport. If Rousey is not all that, let Merloes or Larosa or Carano come prove it.
Meisha Tate is an excellent fighter, but with all due respect, I am not sure she can be the ‘poster girl’ like a Chuck Lidell, Tito Ortiz or GSP.
Ronda speaks truth. For all anyone wants to say about how ‘Cyborg’ was a dominant champion, few can escape the sentiment that Rousey so eloquently touched on in her quote – we all speculated that “Cyborg’ cheated and had gone too far.
Rousey comes from Judo, a sport that undergoes international testing in the Olympics and is generally considered to be a clean sport. Rousey has the background, the charisma, the edge that is needed – now she just has to keep winning! I’m gonna bet we will be talking a lot about Ronda Rousey in the next few years.
