The Strikeforce: Overeem vs Werdum event, aka Strikeforce: Dallas, is the second quarter final event in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament. Contrary to popular belief the winner of the final match of the tournament DOES NOT go home with the Strikeforce Heavyweight belt.
According to the Strikeforce president, the change in the planned format was due to various host city commissions who refused to sanction five-round non-title bouts. Coker said, “It wouldn’t have been fair to make some of the guys fight five rounds and the others only fight three,” so the belt won’t be up for dispute until after the tournament is over.
So if these guys aren’t fighting for the belt, what are they fighting for? Well, besides the fight purse, no other prizes have been mentioned, but obviously the winner will get a shot at the title.
Ok, ok, enough blabber let’s get into the nitty-gritty picks:
Strikeforce Betting: Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum
Overeem has been on a winning streak since 2007 and is one of two people to have beaten Brett Rogers. Can Werdum stop the Reems 9 win streak? It’s a possibility…but read on before you start throwing rotten tomatoes at me! Werdum definitely has more of just a punchers chance in this fight. Not much people can argue with me on this one as Fabricio Werdum dethroned “The Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko via triangle choke in the face of getting pummeled. Will he beat Overeem? I don’t think so. There! I said it, so give me my balls back.
Alistair Overeem, the “Demolition Man,” “is the current Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion, DREAM Interim Heavyweight Champion, and K-1 World Grand Prix Champion, and made history by being the only fighter in combat sports to hold a world title in both MMA and in K-1 kickboxing at the same time.” Boo ya, you can’t argue with Wikipedia or the facts! Ok, ok, I know I am hyping Overeem too much as apart from Brett Rogers he hasn’t had too much real competition over the last 4 years. But the fact of the matter is there is a huge chance that he will KO Werdum in the first round like he did in his previous 8 wins before he gets submitted.
Strikeforce Betting Pick: If I was Live In-Fight Betting at BetDSI.com, I would bet on Overeem to KO Werdum in the second round if for some reason he doesn’t do it in the first.
