The Atlanta Falcons Look To Become A Younger Team This Off-Season

The Atlanta Falcons look to become a younger Team by the time this off-season is said and done. Coming so close to the Super Bowl last season they have cleaned house of some high priced contracts and will likely get younger with the draft as well as make a few moves via free agency. The recent release of veterans DE Jonathan Abraham, CB Dunta Robinson, and RB Michael Turner will be a sign of things to come this draft as they will need to fill some major positions on both sides of the ball.

The largest shoes to fill are DE Jonathan Abraham the current active sack leader has accounted for 32.5 sacks the past three seasons. Great pass rushers are exceptionally hard to find but it appears the Falcons were willing to part ways with Abraham and must have their eyes on a target come draft time or free agency.

Michael Turner will be easy to fill as his production has been on a sharp decline. With veteran running back Steven Jackson a free agent this season the Falcons will be in negotiations with him, and they could still use a second day draft pick for a quality running back.

Corner back Dunta Robinson is another easy fix as the corner only managed 4 interceptions in three seasons while allowing QB’s to throw for a 105 quarterback rating when targeting him. It is entirely possible that who ever Atlanta drafts will be an upgrade over Robinson at corner.

Future Hall of Famer TE Tony Gonzalez has said it was going to be his last season, if he doesn’t return that will leave a huge hole in the passing attack. This has many to believe Stanford TE Zach Ertz could be the Falcons first pick come draft time but Atlanta could very well could go best pass rusher on board. Needing a pass rusher badly after cutting Abraham the Falcons could move up the board and get a guy they believe will put them over the top like when they aggressively went after WR Julio Jones.

This will be an interesting off-season for the Falcons to see what they do with all that cap room from shedding big contracts. Turner and Robinson were necessary releases as they were not living up to their pay checks, but only time will tell if releasing Jonathan Abrahams comes back to bite them.
