The UFC 146 card scheduled for the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV on May 26th, is headlined by the Heavyweight Title fight between champion Junior Dos Santos and challenger Alistair Overeem, and the company recently confirmed that the rest of the main card on PPV will feature an all heavyweight lineup. Aside from the title fight, the card features a number one contenders match between former champions Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez, winner gets the next title shot. The other three matches scheduled for the pay per view appear to be setting up who the next contender will be for the title in what many call the UFC’s premier division.
One of those bouts is UFC veteran Roy Nelson, who will taking on Strikeforce signee ‘Bigfoot’ Silva. It is an interesting fight of high skilled heavyweights, and I see Silva pulling off the victory. Despite recently getting KO’d by Daniel Cormier in his last outing, Silva is a massive heavyweight with a very high winning percentage, and Nelson has shown a propensity to fall short at times in the big fights. Silva will be motivated for his UFC debut, and Nelson should be fueled by a desperation to win as he is coming off another loss. I give the advantage to Silva, by decision.
Another match with potential future title implications sees Mark Hunt taking on Stefan Struve. Hunt made short work of well regarded Cheick Kongo in his last outing, upping his UFC win total to 3 in a row after a very rough patch that saw him lose six fights. Struve is young and aggressive and has had a solid run in the UFC, boasting a 7-3 record. Struve is the tallest fighter on the UFC roster at 6’11, and Hunt is stocky, but Hunt is a polished striker who can take punishment. I see Hunt taking Struve out to continue his march back to respectability.
