The UFC announced the final revamped version of their UFC 146 scheduled for May 26th in Las Vegas, Nevada. The PPV main card continues to feature the heavyweights, as Junior Dos Santos defends his title against veteran Frank Mir and former champion Cain Velasquez does battle with ‘Bigfoot’ Silva. Moving Silva into the Velasquez fight had left Roy Nelson without an opponent, but that is covered as Gabriel Gonzaga moves in to fight Nelson. The Mark Hunt versus Stefan Struve match remains the same, while Shane Del Rosario gets newcomer Stipe Miocic.
Roy Nelson had a big order in his original fight, Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva, however in Gabriel Gonzaga, he gets a fighter who is trying to make a comeback to the UFC and is infinitely more beatable. Nelson is going to have to stay active in this fight, but he is a tough customer on his feet, and should be better on the ground than “Napao’. This is Nelson’s fight to lose, as he should be in control of where the fight takes place throughout.
The intriguing fight that has just been added is Shane Del Rosario taking on Stipe Miocic is a fight between two young up and coming fighters that sport undefeated records and are making their UFC debuts.
It is hard to bet against Miocic, a rugged Eastern European who has been fighting in the midwest and has shown excellent striking. However, Del Rosario is a 23 year old who has also shown devastating KO power in his fights and is going to have a sizeable reach advantage over the stockier, shorter limbed Miocic. This one has exciting fight written all over it, as both men prefer the stand up and come to bang. Also, as UFC debutantes, the pair will both be looking to have a memorable first showing. I’m looking for this fight to NOT go the distance, and I see Del Rosario taking it in a slugfest.
