When Melvin Guillard entered the cage against Joe Lauzon at UFC 136 he was being touted as a title contender. He entered the cage on the back of a five-fight win streak, yet Lauzon submitted him in just 47 seconds. In his next bout against Jim Miller he was submitted in the first round falling again to a rear naked choke.
His next fight was obviously a high-risk battle for him as he fought to avoid a three fight-losing streak in the octagon and against submission specialist Fabricio Camoes that was a real possibility. Although Guillard made hard work of it, he did get a unanimous decision and showed some better ground defense as he escaped a few dangerous situations.
Donald Cerrone is a submission specialist, a fact that should have Guillard on edge from the word “fight!” Of Guillards 10 defeats, 9 have come via submission.
BetDSI have these two at:
Melvin Guillard -250
Donald Cerrone +310
Putting Cerrone quite rightly as a strong favorite.
I am unable really to see beyond Cerrone, in fact this is as close to a gimmie as I have seen for a long time. Guillard has flattered to deceive on too many occasions and I do not think he has enough of a skillset or the power to tackle a fighter as talented as Cerrone. In fact the only possible opportunity I see is, if Cerrone should walk into a knee and that ain’t gonna happen!
Cerrone has an impressive UFC record of 5-1. His only loss in the octagon was a decision against Nate Diaz, a fighter of significantly higher quality than Guillard.
Cerrone must still be considered a title contender however he has fallen short against Benson Henderson twice already so I don’t know if the UFC would consider him a worthy opponent. His better option would be to hope that Nate Diaz can get a shot at the championship belt and then hope for a rematch against him. But for now all that Cerrone can do is continue to win and put on exciting displays.
I fully expect Donald Cerrone to win this fight within the three rounds
UFC 151 Pick: Donald Cerrone Rd 2 via Rear Naked Choke.
