The UFC 157 card scheduled for February 23rd, 2013 in Las Vegas and headlined by the first ever women’s UFC bout between Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche is beginning to fill out. A 145 lb bout between Chad Mendes and Manny Gamburyan. Mendes is 13-1 overall and has made short work of his two opponents since his loss to Jose Aldo, so he will likely be a wide favorite when the odds are set at the sportsbooks. Does Manny have a shot?
Gamburyan is a pretty talented fighter who has really not lived up to expectations in his MMA career, but he is talented and physical and if he is big time underdog may be worth a value bet.
In his last outing, Gamburyan got back on the winning track after losing three in a row by winning a Decision over Japanese veteran Michihiro Omigawa. Early in his career Gamburyan was a buzzsaw who won several fights by submission in less than 2 minutes, and he also has a fast KO victory over Middleweight stand out Jorge Santiago. He also has quality wins over former WEC champion Mike Brown and Leonard Garcia. But he has struggled with inconsistency.
Mendes has come back strong with two first round KO’s after the dissappointment of his title fight loss. This was a good development, as Mendes had wracked up several Decision wins and there were beginning to be questions about his ability to finish. He has the fists to stop fights.
He is also a skilled grappler with extreme high level wrestling, while Gamburyan is more of a go for broke submission artist. Mendes is likely to have the advantage in the grappling, even if he is pressured with attempts. He will be on top delivering punishment if it goes to the ground.
Gamburyan will have a submitter and a puncher’s chance, but he will have a hard time getting off against Mendes who is a winner at every level he has competed in.
Probably the odds will open at 4 to 1 or more in favor of Mendes, and just go up from there. At some point if they get high enough, the match becomes a bet the underdog or stay away from the fight all together.
