This past weekend at UFC 158, Indiana’s Darren Elkins earned his fifth UFC win in a row as a featherweight when he stopped Antonio Carvalho in the opening round of their match. Elkins, who owns an impressive 16-2 record overall was clear after the fight – he wanted to step it up and fight a top name in the division. Well Elkins will get his wish on April 20th in San Jose, California at the UFC on FOX 7 event where he will face top contender Chad Mendes.

Look for Mendes to come in favored when the lines open for this fight at the sportsbooks. Mendes is fighting in his home area, he has two dominant stoppages is a row after he stumbled against Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo, and is generally considered the second best featherweight on the planet. His team at Alpha Male includes Urijah Faber and Joseph Benavides and are potentially the best team of fighters in lower weight classes on the planet. He is a stud wrestler and he can knock you out.
Mendes has lost several opponents, most recently Clay Guida, who Elkins is replacing. With the bout taking place on April 20th, it gives Elkins roughly a month. This should not be too much of a factor, as Elkins is well conditioned and he came out of the Carvalho fight relatively unscathed.
Elkins is going to be a bit taller and have a reach advantage over Mendes. He is also a rugged fighter who can take punishment and he has an unorthodox game that forces the pace and is based on not being held down. Elkins is a good wrestler himself, though not as decorated as Mendes, and he will need to avoid the takedowns and ground and pound of Mendes. If he can do that, he has a very solid shot at winning this fight.
