The UFC 165 event is less than a week away. The show is headlined by Lightheavyweight and Bantamweight title defenses, and features a respectable main card that could turn in good fights or some real boring ones. Leading the list is the heavyweight matchup between ‘TUF’ veterans Matt Mitrione and Brendan Schaub, which is basically a pick ‘em fight with Schaub at (+100) to Mitrione’s (-120). At Middleweight, Costas Philippou sits a (-190) favorite over Francis Carmont who returns (+190), and the lightweight brawl sees undefeated Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov (-230) take on veteran Pat Healy (+190).

Mitrione and Schaub has been hyped up with some internet vitriol between the two, but it basically amounts to a lower rung Heavyweight fight. Mitrione is coming off a less than 30 second KO win but is still trying to right his ship after two previous losses. Schaub is also trying to extend his win streak beyond 1 fight and is 1-2 in his last 3. His last outing was panned for being boring, as he basically hugged Lavar Johnson out of the UFC. If they come out and bang early and get out in a round, it will be an entertaining fight, if it goes three this match will suck. Regardless who wins, neither is a threat to the title picture.
The Carmont-Philippou match also has a lot of potential. We are going to find out a little more about Carmont, who is 5-0 in the UFC against tepid competition. Philippou is 5-1 and owns a win over Tim Boetch, who is better than anyone Carmont has ever faced. Look for Philippou to edge Carmont in another bout that could be exciting or could be boring. Both men have a tendency to fall into a stand up game, and a stalemate on the feet for three rounds is something no one wants to see.
Perhaps saving the day, and having a high potential for ‘Fight of the Night’ is the Lightweight bout between Healy and Nurmagomedov. Nurmagomedov is just 24 years old and is 4-0 in the UFC and undefeated overall in his career and he is starting to get a lot of attention as a future star. Healy as an underdog may be a good gamble, as the veteran is at the top of his game and has made a career out of playing spoiler to top fighters. Healy is by far the toughest competition of Nurmagomedov’s career.
