The last time he hooked up with Cain Velasquez, Antonio Silva left looking like this!

The UFC announced some of the Memorial Day Weekend festivities for UFC 160 on May 25th from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.  The card will be headlined by a Heavyweight title defense for champion Cain Velasquez, as he faces Antonio Silva for the second time. After thinking about it, UFC President Dana White has given Silva a title shot based on a solid two fight winning streak where he KO’d young Travis Browne and also took out top contender Alistair Overeem with a resounding 3rd round stoppage.

Silva fought Velasquez in May of last year, and he got run over as Velasquez returned to the octagon wth a vengeance after a long layoff.   The fight looked especially brutal because of the gruesome cut that Silva received, causing blood to spill everywhere.

As a big strong guy with KO power, Silva always has a chance.  Silva has good cardio and he has shown in his fights that he can take a lot of punishment, and that he cancome back from behind in a fight.

But there is no reason to think that this fight will not go Cain’s way.  Against Overeem, Silva was losing rounds until Overeem tired.  Velasquez has shown time and again that waiting for him to tire is not a good idea.  For the heavyweight division, Velasquez kept up a tremendous pace for the full five rounds against Junior Dos Santos, who is a better athlete than Silva.  In other words, the strategy he used against Overeem cannot work for Silva against Velasquez, because it is Silva who will tire first.

Like he proved against Dos Santos the second time around, Velasquez is a pace setter and he has the gas to implement his will for five rounds.  If Cain is in top shape, he will find it easier to implement that game plan on SIlva than he did on Dos Santos.  Like the first time he fought Silva, he could also overwhelm or cut him.

The first time they met, Velasquez was a big favorite despite a long layoff healing injuries after his loss to Dos Santos.  The odds closed at 4 to 1 or thereabouts if I recall.for that first encounter, and  there is no reason to think that the line won’t open right around there for this rematch.
