UFC: Daniel Cormier Calls Out Jon Jones

Daniel Cormier has been a force in the Heavyweight division, making him a top contender should he drop to Lightheavyweight.

STRIKEFORCE Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier is still without an opponent for the dying November 3rd event.  It is widely expected that Cormier, who is probably on most top 5 Heavyweight lists, would end his STRIKEFORCE contract with this fight and head over towards the UFC.  It is unclear still how SF will die, but it is happening soon.  A third glossy match between Liz Carmouche and Sara Mcmann has been cancelled from the event, so it should be cancelled any minute now.  Meanwhile, Cormier was talking about dropping to 205 lbs and facing UFC Lightheavyweight Champion Jon Jones.  Now that would be something.

Cormier is talking about coaching ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ opposite Jones, and that may or may not happen.  The future of ‘TUF’ after 16 seasons is up in the air, but Cormier has the right idea.  He wants a span of a few months in order to cut the weight correctly, etc.

From an oddsmaker perspective, this will be a very interesting line to set.  With what is immediately in front of Jon Jones, who is a dominant champion, is Dan Henderson, Lyoto Machida, ‘Shogun’ Rua and perhaps Chael Sonnen.  We have seen odds on some of those bouts come in with Jones between 6 to 1 and 10 to 1 favored.  That is ridiculous and takes a lot of the potential action out of the Lightheavyweight title picture.

Jones will likely enjoy his usual reach and height advantage, but he will not be the better wrestler and after rehydration, will likely be the lighter of the two men.

Cormier has been fighting in the 235-240 lb weight range.  He must figure he can trim up a bit and weigh about 225 lbs then do the last 20 pounds the week of the fight, and it does seem feasible.

Will he be as strong and rugged as he has been at 240 lbs?  That remains to be seen.

I could see Jones still opening as the favorite, but the line should be much more attractive for bettors than 6 to 1 or greater which is what Jones will enjoy against other opposition.

Cormier however, has shot to the forefront of potential interesting matches for Jon Jones.  The truth is, until Cormier popped up, there was no 0one on the ZUFFA roster who had this much potential to make it interesting.
