Last night in Virginia, at the UFC on FUEL TV 3 main event, Korea’s Chan Sung Jung defeated Louisiana’s Dustin Poirier in impressive fashion. What made the win even more impressive for the ‘Korean Zombie’ was that he came in a heavy underdog, and he got to display his stand up, his ground game, his toughness and his aggression. According to UFC President Dana White, The Zombie may be in position to take on the winner of Jose Aldo-Eric Koch for the Featherweight title.
The UFC could put a title fight between Jung and Aldo in Seoul, South Korea, and it would be HUGE. Jung himself hinted that the market is ready for a UFC style show, and that there are (and I quote) many fighters better than him in Korea. Well, the Zombie proved he is up there this past week!
The main thing is the UFC needs to use this opportunity, because though the Zombie has been very impressive, especially in this last match, he has no chance against a guy like Aldo.
What the Zombie does, he does on guts and guile. That isn’t going to work with an athlete like Aldo, who is going to dictate the pace and he is going to decide where the fight takes place. Aldo is going to be too much.
But that doesn’t mean that the UFC cannot use this as a way into one of the bigger Asian markets.
The Zombie fought a great fight against Poirier, he cannot fight aggressive like that against a precise fighter like Aldo. He is going to have to slow down the pace and fight a methodical fight just to survive.
Because lets face it – Poirier was overrated. Like many guys who get into the UFC nowadays and face an generally equal opponent, he is young and still learning. So he put a few decent wins together. Poirier should never have been the favorite in this fight.
And a win over Poirier should not be enough to earn you a title shot. Yes, the destruction of Hominick earns some props, but the ZOmbie needs more fights, which he is unlikely to get.
So if the UFC is going to toss him into the fire, they should do it in a way that opens a new market for them, and finds them new stars. Let’s find those better fighters the Zombie talked about.
