Lorenz Larkin (throwing punches above) enters the UFC with an unblemished record. Will that last beyond this weekend, when he meets Francis Carmont?

This weekend’s UFC on FOX 7 card features an interesting Middleweight matchup between two fighters who are looking to improve their rankings when Frenchman Francis Carmont, winner of 9 in a row, faces undefeated Strikeforce veteran Lorenz Larkin.  A victory for either man will likely propel them several rungs up the ladder, with things sure to get harder for either man in their next match.

Both men are on healthy win streaks (though Larkin had a loss overturned to a No Contest when opponent King Mo failed a drug test).  Both men also started their careers as Light heavyweights and have found success since deciding to cut weight to the Middleweight division.

Carmont is long and lanky, which makes him dangerous and unorthodox in both the stand up and the ground game.  He needs to avoid fighting at a slow pace however.  Larkin with his aggressive stand up game will have disadvantages in reach and height, but he has firepower in his hands.  Larkin needs to stay aggressive and keep the fight standing.

Carmont has been easy to support since joining the UFC, as he has gone 4-0 with the big company.  In Larkin however, Carmont is fighting a guy who is tasting the UFC for the first time.  Will this work in Larkin’s favor, motivating him to a new level now that he is on the big show?  Will Carmont get complacent?  If he makes a mistake or is tentative, Larkin has the right killer instinct to take him out.

Right now at the sports books, Lorenz Larkin (+110) is the underdog, with Francis Carmont favored at (-140), so it is pretty much close to a pick ‘em fight.

With a win, both men are looking at a step up in competition, possibly against the likes of Mark Munoz, Luke Rockhold, Brian Stann, Jacare Souza or any of what is a solid roster for the UFC heading towards title contention.
